Basement walls that are showing signs of bowing, buckling, and tilting can get worse over time, and they should be addressed before finishing the basement.

However, most homeowners will want to finish their basement and enjoy the space right away, and wall anchors may take some time before your wall has returned to its original position.

Your foundation repair expert can talk with you about options to quickly and effectively restore your foundation wall to its original, straight alignment.

What causes foundation walls to tilt?

The main culprit for tilting walls is the soil in the ground that surrounds your foundation or basement walls. As the soil shifts, it can put an immense amount of pressure on your walls and cause them to bow or tilt inward. Rainstorms cause the soils to become saturated with water and expand in size and push up against your walls.

As the soils continue to expand and shift, it will cause more problems for your walls and they will continue to become more damaged and eventually fail. In order to completely repair your failing wall, the problem soils must be addressed first.

Signs of Failing Foundation Wall

It’s important to be able to recognize the signs of wall failure in order to know when to call in the experts. If you ever notice any of the following signs, contact our team to see if wall anchors are a good option for your home:

  • Wall cracks, horizonal or stair-step
  • Diagonal cracking at corners
  • Inward bowing or bulging
  • Walls tilting at the top

How We Install the GeoLockā„¢ Wall Anchor System

foundation-wall-repair-step-1-thm
1Excavate Perimeter of Your Foundation

First, we must excavate the soil around your home’s foundation to prepare it for the wall anchor installation. This step is usually only necessary for emergency wall straightening, which we will determine before we install the system. Once the perimeter is excavated, we are ready for the next step.

2Install the Earth Anchor

Earth anchors must be installed in order to attach the anchor rod that will hold the system in place. Our crew will dig holes where each anchor will be installed in order to prep the placement of the anchor.

3Prepare Foundation Wall

Small holes will be drilled into your foundation, which is where the steel rod will be installed that will extend through your foundation and into the soil where the anchors were placed. These holes are very small and do not disrupt your foundation’s structure.

4Install Wall Plates

Wall plates will then be installed on the inside of your foundation wall that will attach to the steel rods. Once the rod is secured to the wall plate, your walls will no longer tilt or bow.

5Straighten Walls

Our crew will begin to tighten and adjust the system to try and straighten your walls back to their original position. This may or may not be possible depending on the condition of your walls, but the anchor system will ensure that there won’t be any further movement.

6Clean Up

Our crew always makes sure to clean up the mess and leave your home looking just as good as it did when we arrived. We can also install the Hide-A-Way® Wall Anchor Covers to hide the anchors for a clean, finished look.
