Homeowner, Katie was experiencing wall cracks on her basement walls. She was not sure what was the best way to take care of the problem and did not want to see the problem get worse. A Design Specialist was able to come out to Katie's home and talk to her about why walls fail and explain to her the different stages of wall failure.
Changes in surrounding soil of a home are the primary causes of foundation settlement. Soil can contain air pockets where water can flow into this area. This area is called an "active wedge". Water can freeze in this area causing pressure to be pushed onto the wall causing the wall to start to lean or crack. There are three main causes of wall failure. Wet soil expanding into the wall, hydrostatic pressure from water stacked up outside the wall, and also frost pushing against the wall. There are four stages of wall failure. The first stage is horizontal wall cracks. The second stage is staircase cracks. The third stage is continued pressure and would cause lean or sheer. The fourth stage we want to prevent this stage from even happening. Homeowner, Katie was experiencing the second stage of wall failure. As you can see in the picture, there are staircase cracks starting in the upper right corner of the wall. This is a wall problem that needs to be taken care of so it does not lead into the third or fourth stage.
There are many proven solutions that can help stabilize and straighten the wall! The FSI Push Pier system is a great solution that would be able to permanently stabilize Katie's home foundation. The system has steel tube sections that are hydraulically driven through steel foundation brackets. The home foundation will no longer hold the weight and now the Push Pier's will.
